(Disney, 1959) A beautiful concept painting by Disney Legend Peter Ellenshaw for “Darby O’Gill and the Little People.” Peter Ellenshaw was a master of matte-on-glass painting, a practical effect technique in which elaborate, fantastic, or historical details painted on glass are filmed on location, adding them into the scene. For “Darby O’Gill,” Ellenshaw’s talent combined with oversized props and sets to create the illusion of miniature leprechauns side-by-side with full-sized humans. This painting plots out the crucial practical effect shot in the film where actor Albert Sharpe (Darby), enters the leprechaun’s throne room, and where leprechaun actors and oversized plots will fill out the scene beyond him. Accomplished in gouache on paper, the painting has an image size of 14.5” x 29.5” of 22.5” x 35.5” and displays in very good condition with light wear from age and original production use.
